Abstract

Perylene (II) was first prepared by heating 1,1′-dinaphthyl (I) or naphthalene with aluminium chloride. However, the yield was poor.1 The constitution was proved by its formation from 1,8-di-iodonaphthalene (III) and copper powder.1 It is also formed in 4% yield from 1-bromonaphthalene and aluminium chloride.2 A yield of 3% is obtained from 1-bromonaphthalene and lithium.3 A small yield of perylene is formed by pyrolysis of naphthalene at 650°, the main product being 2,2′-dinaphthyl.4
