Hydrocarbons Consisting of Six-membered Rings in which One Carbon Atom Is Linked with Two Hydrogen Atoms

Abstract

Perinaphthenone was first obtained by oxidation from pyrene. This gives a mixture of pyrenequinones and perinaphthenone-dicarboxylic acid (I). Decarboxylation of the latter yields perinaphthenone (II).1 It is more easily accessible by a condensation of a-or ß-naphthol with glycerol and sulphuric acid.2 The yields can be considerably improved by the addition of sodium nitrobenzenesulphonate.3
