Abstract

Quaterphenyl is formed by pyrolysis if benzene is distilled through a glowing iron tube1 or over an electrically heated wire.2 4-Bromodiphenyl and sodium yield quaterphenyl3 as well as 4-iododiphenyl with copper powder at 250–270°4 or with magnesium.5 4-Bromo- or iododophenyl, hydrazine and methanolic potassium hydroxide give quaterphenyl.6 It is also obtained from dibenzoylperoxide and benzene7 or by reduction of diazotized 4-aminodiphenyl.8 1,8-Diphenyloctatetraene (I) reacts with maleic anhydride to form the adduct (II). Dehydrogenation with potassium ferricyanide and decarboxylation with soda-lime yield quaterphenyl.9
