The Isolation of Wheat Mitochondrial DNA and RNA

Abstract

Interest in plant mitochondrial (mt) DNA and RNA has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. The physical complexity of flowering plant mtDNA, first described by Quetier and Vedel (1977), is still a topic of study and is as yet not fully understood. The presence in plant mitochondria of a unique 5 S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) (absent from all other mitochondria) was recognized early and was the topic of several publications from our group (Bonen and Gray 1980; Spencer et al. 1981).
