Abstract
Models for the transmission of infection in a community will be established in two stages. In the first stage, treated in this. chapter, we consider models for the infection of individual hosts and also models for the infection of populations of hosts. These models will be combined in the next three chapters to form transmission models. It is only the latter type of model that possesses threshold phenomena that allow a study of conditions that lead to eradication of the infection.
