Effects of the Rotation of the Earth

  • Chapter
Principles of Geodynamics

Abstract

The Earth is a celestial body and is as such subject to gravitation. If all other forces were absent, the Earth would exhibit the form of a sphere and its surface would be perfectly smooth. We have already discussed some of the surface irregularities, but the principal departure from spherical shape is due to the rotation of the Earth.
