Abstract
The basic problem in the study of the Earth’s crust is to understand its deformations. Unfortunately, the general physics of deformations is not as well understood as one might desire.

A recent investigation by RUDNICK [RUDNICK, P.: Trans. Amer. Geophys. Un. 37, 137 (1956)] puts the period of the Chandler wobble as equal to 432 ± 2.6 days and the decay time equal to 9.5 years.

In this instance it may for instance be noted that MELCHIOR [MELCHIOR, P. J.: Rend. Accad. Naz. Lincei; Cl. fis. mat. nat. Ser. VII, 19, 137 (1955)] doubts entirely the validity of the usual analyses of the variation of latitude. He questions the applicability of the basic equations of motion.
