Structure and Mechanical Properties of Plastics

Abstract

The characteristic structural feature of polymeric systems which leads to their remarkable mechanical properties is the existence of long chain molecules endowed with Brownian movement. The thermal motion may be thought of as translation of molecular segments with rotation around chain bonds. The translations and rotations of individual segments within a molecule are of course not independent. Some rearrangements are rapid, others slow, according to the degree of cooperation required among segments close together or far apart1. The overall motion is a complicated combination of different modes and covers a very wide range of time scale (§ 8).
