The theory of stellar evolution indicates that stars are being formed continuously in our galaxy. Calculations of the collapse of a cloud of interstellar material have been carried out recently, showing that for a certain period the light of the core of the collapsing cloud is obscured by the material which is still falling on to the main body. It is therefore to be excepted that in the state of formation the star can be observed in the infrared and radio frequencies. Recent investigations of the stability of self-gravitating rotating disks provide an explanation of the formation of spirals in galactic systems in which density waves favour the formation of stars.
