Zusammenfassung
Wenn die einzige Wechselwirkung von Strahlung mit Materie in der Entfernung des betrachteten Partikels aus dem Strahlenbündel besteht, dann ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit p , daß ein Photon oder Neutron bis zu einer Entfernung x durchdringt : p = G e −Σ x, wobei G einen geometrischen Faktor bedeutet. Wenn jedoch Streuprozesse ebenfalls eintreten, dann wird die Berechnung viel komplizierter, da sich bei jedem Streuprozeß eine „neue“ Strahlungsquelle bildet. Die Gesamtzahl der Photonen in einem System wird durch Compton-Kollisionen nicht geändert, da an die Stelle eines primären Photons stets ein gestreutes Photon tritt. Bei der Paarbildung werden für ein absorbiertes Photon zwei neue Annihilationsphotonen erzeugt. Nur durch photoelektrische Absorption wird die Anzahl der Photonen reduziert. Die Akkumulation der sekundären, hauptsächlich der Compton-gestreuten Photonen beeinflußt in hohem Maße den ganzen Prozeß des Strahlendurchgangs durch Materie. Bei gegebener Verteilung der γ-Strahlenquelle besteht demnach das allgemeine Problem der Berechnung der Durchdringung von Gamma-Strahlung durch ein Medium in der Bestimmung der primären (ungestreuten) und sekundären (gestreuten) γ-Photonen, die an jedem Punkt des Mediums in jeder Richtung strömen.
