Pacific-Type Continental Margins

  • Chapter
The Geology of Continental Margins

Abstract

In the introduction of “Atlantic-type” continental margins (Heezen, this volume) it is noted that Pacific-type or “tectonically active” margins are not confined to the Pacific ocean but are found in the Atlantic (Antilles and South Antilles) and the Indian oceans (Indonesia-Sunda Trench) as well. Earthquake epicenter plots bear out that observation (Barazangi and Dorman, 1969). Nevertheless, the present report will be concerned almost wholly with Pacific trench occurrences, and even more narrowly with topographic-bathymetric exploration and ancillary observations relating to, or elucidating, morphological characteristics. Later in this volume various authors will treat in detail integrated geological-geophysical observations on specific trenches or island arcs in order to explain the geological history of the Pacific Ocean borders.
