Abstract
Over the past few years a number of different writing systems have been the object of intensive investigation, and researchers from widely differing disciplines have begun to meet in order to share their thoughts and compare results. Philosophers, anthropologists, scholars of ancient history, psychologists, linguists, and neuroscientists are now combining their efforts in order to reach a better understanding of the role played by writing in the sociocultural construction of the modern world.
