Abstract
Now that the threat of nuclear self destruction seems to have diminished as a result of the relaxation of tensions between the superpowers, another Damocles’ sword appears to be hanging over the world. This time mankind seems to be challenging continued human existence more indirectly by changing the global environment on which man depends for survival. Awareness is growing that immediate actions are necessary to prevent future global environmental catastrophes. In order to define the nature of the actions to be taken, the need for more scientific research is often stressed. However, there is no reason to wait for the results of such research before beginning to take action. And what may be even more important than scientific results, is the way in which this knowledge is communicated and used in the decision-making process. This chapter discusses the incorporation of environmental research into the decision-making process.
