Artefacts in Digital Storage Phosphor Radiography

Abstract

A variety of artefacts not known in conventional film-screen imaging systems occurs in digital storage phosphor radiography. They may seriously impair image quality by imitating or masking pathology. They need to be recognized in order to repair the system, improve its maintenance, insure adequate system handling and adjust post-processing algorithms. Artefacts due to image plate-, image reader- and laser printer defects, faulty image read-out, processing errors and unsharp masking are discussed.
