Zusammenfassung
Der Körper gewinnt die von ihm benötigte Energie durch den oxidativen Abbau der Nahrungsstoffe, also durch ihre Verbrennung. Er ist daher auf die ständige Zufuhr von Sauerstoff (O2) angewiesen. So verbraucht der Mensch in Ruhe etwa 300 ml Sauerstoff pro Minute, was mit einem Energiegewinn von etwa 1,5 kcal oder 6,3 J (Joule) verbunden ist. Aus der Verbrennung der 300 ml Sauerstoff fallen rund 250 ml Kohlendioxyd (CO2) an, die an die Außenluft abgegeben werden müsse.
