Während in früheren Jahren die lokalen Betäubungsverfahren in der Urologie allgemein bevorzugt wurden, gewinnt heute die Vollnarkose immer mehr an Bedeutung. Der vielfach vorgebrachte Einwand, daß die Allgemeinbetäubung eine stärkere Beeinträchtigung des Stoffwechsels hervorrufe, und daß der postoperative Verlauf mit mehr Komplikationen belastet sei als bei Verwendung einer Form der Lokalanaesthesie, läßt sich heute in Anbetracht der in den letzten Jahren erreichten Vervollkommnung der Allgemeinanaesthesie nach Einführung der Relaxantien und neuerer Narkotica nicht mehr in der ursprünglichen Form aufrechterhalten. Selbst bei schweren Störungen der Nieren- und Leberfunktion und bei Vorliegen ernsterer Stoffwechselerkrankungen kann heute eine Vollnarkose durchgeführt werden, ohne daß eine zusätzliche Beeinträchtigung der Organ- oder Stoffwechselfunktionen eintreten muß.
