Zusammenfassung

Elektronische Post (Electronic Mail, E-Mail) repräsentiert den wohl am häufigsten genutzten und verbreitetsten Dienst des Internet. Sie dient, wie ihre Bezeichnung schon vermuten läßt, der zeitversetzten Übermittlung von Informationen und Nachrichten zwischen zwei oder mehreren Kommunikationspartnern. Das prinzipielle Vorgehen entspricht dabei im wesentlichen dem Vorgehen bei herkömmlicher Briefpost: ein Absender entwirft eine Nachricht, versieht sie mit der Internet-Anschrift (= E-Mail-Adresse) des Empfängers und sendet diese sodann ab. Daraufhin wird die E-Mail an den Mail-Server, an den dieser Benutzer angeschlossen ist (ähnlich einem Postamt), übergeben und innerhalb von Minuten (z.T. auch nur Sekunden) über das Internet an den E-Mail-Server des Empfängers versandt. Dort wird sie solange aufbewahrt, bis der Empfänger sich einloggt und seine EMail-Software startet (im übertragenen Sinne in seinen Briefkasten schaut). Bevor nun auf Erweiterungen und zusätzliche Leistungsmerkmale, die E-Mail gegenüber herkömmlicher Briefpost aufweist, eingegangen wird, soll eine kurze Beschreibung der wichtigsten Bestandteile einer E-Mail erfolgen.
