Zusammenfassung
Wenn auch signifikante Fortschritte im Verständnis der Mechanismen sekundärer Hypertonieformen gemacht wurden, bleibt doch die Ätiologie der essentiellen Hypertonie ein Rätsel. Die Bezeichnung „essentiell“ ist falsch. Irrtümlicherweise glaubte man, der erhöhte Blutdruck sei „essentiell“, um eine adäquate Gewebeperfusion bei Hypertonikern zu gewährleisten. Da die auslösende Ursache der essentiellen Hypertonie nicht erwiesen ist, wäre „idiopathische“ Hypertonie eine bessere Bezeichnung. 90% der Hypertoniker mit systolischer und diastolischer Druckerhöhung haben diese Hypertonieform.
