Consider a point mass, with mass m, on the line R and subject to a force law depending uniquely on its position. Therefore, a force law ξ→f(ξ) is given, ξ ∈ R, which we shall suppose to be of class C ∞, associating with every point ξ on the line R the component f(ξ) of the force acting on the point when it happens to occupy ξ.
