Das gastrointestinale System ist die Pforte, durch die Nährstoffe, Vitamine, Mineralstoffe und Flüssigkeiten in den Organismus aufgenommen werden. Vor allem im Dünndarm werden Eiweißkörper, Fette und hochmolekulare Kohlenhydrate in ihre resorbierbaren Bruchstücke aufgespalten (verdaut).
