Abstract

Nowadays such a wide range of biological entities are considered to be viruses that most recent definitions of viruses have been outdated within a year or so, and it is increasingly difficult to devise a general definition that would be accepted by most virologists. In this chapter we will only discuss viruses that are transmissible parasites, whose nucleic acid genome is less than 3 x 108 daltons in weight, and that need ribosomes and other components of their host cells for replication.
