Zusammenfassung
Viele Steroide werden besonders wegen ihrer Hormonwirkung in der Medizin verwendet. Manche dieser Hormone ließen sich bis vor kurzem nur außerordentlich schwierig, z.T. gar nicht in größeren Mengen herstellen, bis man sich seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt die Eigenschaften einer großen Anzahl von Mikroorganismen zunutze machte, Steroide an bestimmten Stellen chemisch zu transformieren. Bei diesen Transformationen besteht die biochemische Leistung des betreffenden Mikroorganismus oft nur aus einem chemischen Schritt, z. B. einer Hydroxylie-rung, einer Einführung von Sauerstoff als Keton o. ä.
