The Place of Atomic Order in the Physics of Solids and in Metallurgy

Abstract

Order is ubiquitous in the world of materials, as is disorder. Both concepts are thoroughly ambiguous, and highly important, like “democracy” or “explanation”. This chapter is devoted to just one of the manifestations of order: it is variously named atomic order, chemical order, spatial order or compositional order, but here only the first of these alternative terms will be used. To put the matter anthropomorphically, as it often is, this kind of order stems from a preference by atoms to have unlike atoms as nearest neighbours.
