Abstract
First the historical development of the necessity of physics, especially solid-state physics, in the discovery, analysis, design and production of new materials in modern ages is outlined, together with the definition of the new or advanced materials. The role of physics in the development of new materials is exemplified by the case of shape memory alloys and of strong permanent magnets. A technique to produce nanocrystals (extremely fine crystalline particles) by evaporation, invented by a physicist and their new properties theoretically predicted by other physicists, is also mentioned. In the last part the contents of this volume is introduced with emphasis on the importance of physics.
