Die Lern- und Gedächtnispsychologie ist in zwei theoretisch divergierende Forschungsrichtungen geteilt, die sich auch in der Physiologie von Lernen und Gedächtnis wiederfinden:

  1. a)

    Lernen und Gedächtnis als Konditionierung (klassisch oder instrumenteil),

  2. b)

    Lernen und Gedächtnis als kognitive Prozesse.
