Zusammenfassung
Die Umdrehung der Erde um ihre Achse führt bei pflanzlichen und tierischen Organismen zu einem circa 24-stündigen Licht- und Temperaturrhythmus, der fast alle physiologischen und psychologischen Variationen beeinflußt. Diese circadianen (circa = ungefähr; dies = Tag) Rhythmen sind zum Großteil keine passiven Konsequenzen des Hell-Dunkel-Rhythmus des Tages, sondern Ausdruck der Aktivität organismusinterner Oszillatoren („Uhren“) mit definierten Oszillationsperioden (τ), die meist von „Zeitgebern“ der Umgebung synchronisiert, „mitgenommen“ (entrain) werden. Die Oszillationsperiode des externen Zeitgebers (T) stimmt dabei selten exakt mit der Periode des endogenen Rhythmus überein. In diesem Fall sprechen wir von Phasenverschiebung zwischen den Phasen des biologischen Rhythmus mit einer definierten Phase (τ) und der Phase des Zeitgebers (T) (Abb. 26-1). Den endogenen Charakter vieler, aber nicht aller biologischer Rhythmen erkennt man vor allem nach Ausschaltung des externen Zeitgebers, z.B. der Hell-Dunkel-Variation. Endogene Rhythmen laufen danach mit veränderter Periodik weiter (Freilauf). Abb. 26-2 zeigt die Periodik einiger wichtiger Rhythmen bei strenger zeitlicher Synchronisation durch einen 24-Stunden-Zeitgeber (Wecken — Schlafen durch Versuchsleiter bei gleicher Beleuchtung).
