Formation and Behavior of the Vortices Associated with a Transverse Jet

Summary

Generating mechanism and growth and decay processes of the vortex pair induced by a jet issuing normal to a cross flow have been experimentally investigated in a subsonic range. The laser-sheet visualization has shown that: (1) The jet behaves like a solid cylinder for a distance from the jet exit. (2) A low energy region due to the jet diffusion spreads only laterally in jet cross-sections. The growth and decay processes are also shown using velocity vectors in the jet cross-sections. A simple infinite linear vortex model of the vortex pair has successfully explained characteristic features of the velocity field induced by the vortex pair.
