Zusammenfassung

Zu einer Zeit, als in Deutschland meine Vorschläge zur Entwicklung eines Fürsorgedienstes (Außendienst, externer Dienst) im Anschluß an unsere öffentlichen Irrenanstalten im Kreise der Fachleute meist mehr oder minder schroffe Ablehnung oder doch kaum Anhänger fanden (1902–1920), hatte der praktische Sinn des Amerikaners die Bedeutung des Fürsorgedienstes (social work, aftercare work; extra-mural work) und der Beurlaubungen (patients on parole, parole system) erkannt. Das zeigen besonders klar die Ziffern des Staates New York.
