Abstract

Many different viruses cause diseases of the nervous sytem in both man and animals in all parts of the world. Some of the diseases are of considerable human and veterinary importance and their investigation, using histopathological and virological methods, has shed light on the basic mechanisms both of the routes and mode of invasion of the body by viruses and the immunological responses to infection. Many of the tropical virus infections are acute in onset, and often transient in nature; others pursue a chronic and progressive course and at least one recently recognised disease, Kuru, is thought to be caused by an atypical ‘slow’ virus, a newly recognised group of agents the nature of which has yet to be determined.
