Abstract

During the past 20 years it has gradually become recognised that certain forms of ‘primary’ amyloidosis have a genetic basis. Two such disease entities each with a clear cut geographical distribution have come to be recognised, namely, Familial Mediterranean Fever (F.M.F.) and Portuguese amyloid peripheral neuropathy. A non-genetic form of primary amyloidosis is a not uncommon condition in New Guinea.
