Abstract
Until 30 years ago most doctors working in the tropical parts of the world were mainly concerned with the study, prevention and cure of diseases resulting from infections, dietary factors or deficiencies and the physical effects induced by a tropical climate. Non-infectious and neoplastic disease received little attention and many held that tumours were rare and were therefore attributed to the effects of “civilisation”.
