Abstract

Giardia lamblia is a flagellate protozoon which may parasitise the upper half of the small intestine of man. The resulting disease, giardiasis, occurs both in tropical and temperate regions but is much more common in the former. It may affect adults but is much more commonly seen in children occurring in both sporadic and epidemic forms. Epidemics are commonly encountered among children in nurseries. Surveys have shown that in some areas up to 25% of the population may harbour the parasite, and it occurs most frequently in the lower socioeconomic groups exposed to poor standards of sanitation and hygiene.
