Linear Dielectric Response of Matter

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss aspects of the linear dielectric response of matter; our attention is thus directed toward the contribution to the dipole moment per unit volume displayed in (1.7 b). For much of what follows here, the tensor nature of the dielectric response is of little explicit interest, so we assume for the moment the dielectric susceptibility tensor χ αβ (1) introduced in Chap. 1 is diagonal, χ αβ (1) = δ αβ χ.
