Abstract
Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. These were discovered by Leishman and Donovan in 1903 and belong to the family of Trypanosomatidae. They have been recognized since antiquity. On the basis of clinical and morphological characteristics there are three principal forms that can be distinguished (Table 5.1).
