Zusammenfassung

The term social psychiatry has been used and given many connotations by many people in the various fields of scientific endeavor. To some it means the social aspect of psychiatry in general; to others the social management of psychiatric cases; and still others assume there is a social causation of psychiatric afflictions. We feel that at present social psychiatry is best defined as that particular branch of psychiatry that considers the social implications of various psychiatric disorders. Social psychiatry has one very important aspect which influences all psychiatric activity in the community, namely the attitude of the community toward mentally ill patients. This is of great significance because of the marked changes so apparent in many places. Social psychiatry is concerned not only with the overall treatment and kind of psychiatric disorders in relationship to the community, but it is rapidly developing importance and specialized interests. We are concerned here with the new ideas of the treatment of the aged mentally ill, of some types of the mentally retarded, and other psychiatric conditions which formerly were considered solely from the point of view of hospital treatment and care. Today many feel that care in the community for many such patients is feasible and even desirable.
