Zusammenfassung
Brucella bildet kleine, aerobe, gramnegative Coccobacillen. Sie sind unbeweglich, bilden keine Sporen und haben einen relativ geringen Stoffwechsel. Sie sind obligate Parasiten für Menschen und Tiere. Charakteristisch ist ihre intracelluläre Lagerung. Typisch für Br. melitensis ist die Infektion von Ziegen, für Br. suis die Infektion von Schweinen, für Br. abortus die Infektion von Kühen und für B. canis die Infektion von Hunden. Die menschliche Erkrankung, die Brucellose (Febris undulans, Malta-Fieber), ist durch eine akute septicämische Phase charakterisiert, auf die ein chronisches Stadium folgt, das sich über mehrere Jahre erstrecken kann. Viele Gewebe sind beteiligt.
