Zusammenfassung

In Brazil, the constant increase of criminality rates and urban violence generates a feeling of fear and insecurity. More than one million people were murdered in Brazil between 1980 and 2011. The homicide rate of the total population, which was 24,8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 1996, raised to 27,1 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011.

I acknowledge the CAPES-FULBRIGHT research program (grant BEX 1825/14-3), which allowed me to stay in the US in 2013 in order to analyze the data in Raymond Gibbs’ lab at University of California, Santa Cruz. I thank Prof. Gibbs for his valuable comments on a draft version of this paper. I would also like to acknowledge the Center for Inter-American Studies at University of Bielefeld, Germany for inviting me for a stay as a visiting guest lecturer in 2015. I thank Catarina Valle e Flister (IC-PIBIC FAPEMIG), Leticia Grossi (IC-CNPq/UFMG) and Lacey Okonski (UFMG-Fulbright fellow) for reviewing the manuscript.
