Abstract

The importance of Ukraine to the EU is due to several factors: its size and demographic potential (603 thousand sq. km, 44,6 million inhabitants), its strategic location in the “contested borderlands” between the EU and the Russian Federation (Sakwa, 2015), its almost permanent political instability – which is a challenge for the EU – and finally, its role as the principal subject of the Eastern Partnership.
