Childhood and Children’s Rights between Research and Activism

Abstract

This chapter celebrates Manfred Liebel’s contribution to understanding children and childhood, starting with some personal reflections of our interactions over many years. Manfred has played a crucial role in bringing UK sociology of childhood into the realm of German sociological thinking on the study of childhood, and vice versa, as well as inspiring the development of the now wellestablished European Network of Masters courses in children’s rights (www.crean-network.org). Manfred’s work has brought the valuable specific Latin American concept of protagonismo to the study of work in children’s everyday lives, that continues as a theme throughout his research and activism with working children’s movements in Latin America.
