Abstract
Contemporary landscape research is confronted with the differentiation of different landscape disciplines that address specific aspects of the phenomenon or concept of ‘landscape’ using specific paradigms, interpretative approaches and methods. In view of the “complexity of reality” and the “pragmatically determined goals of knowledge” of the respective disciplines, such a differentiation from a historical and theoretical perspective is fundamentally “appropriate” from a factual and methodological point of view and unproblematic. Landscape research, however, finds itself in a doubly ambivalent situation due to these developments.
