Abstract
After preparatory work from different disciplines with historically significant anthologies which (also) deal with ‘landscape’, a cultural-historical reconstruction of the genesis of the German (and partly also European) concept of landscape has meanwhile been established, which diachronically distinguishes three main meanings from ‘landscape.

The clear dominance of the word "nature" over the word "environment" in the survey can be explained by the following factors Schemel et al. (2001) and Schemel (2004) from the clearly more positive resonance of the word "nature" in the form of "sensual and emotional associations" (Schemel 2004, p. 371), while more rational aspects are associated with the word "environment".
