Abstract

“Und das ungeheure Bild der Landschaft…” (English approximately: “And the immense image of the landscape…”) the second verse of the poem Mächtige Landschaft (English: “mighty landscape”) by the German poet Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914) summarises in six words many aspects of the complex understanding of landscape in German: Their cultural effectiveness (countless poems have been written about landscape), their oscillation between image and object, their potential to impress, to relativise their own meaning. In this book, we would like to introduce the international public to essential aspects of the specific shaping of the relationship between society and landscape as it has developed in the German-speaking world since the Middle Ages.
