Die Betrachtung von Öffentlichkeit und damit einhergehender theoretischer Diskurse eröffnet ein weites Feld unterschiedlichster Begriffsfassungen und Synonyme, die sich etwa in Gegensätzen wie „öffentlich und privat“, „öffentlicher Raum und Privatsphäre“, „öffentliche Meinung“ bzw. „nichtöffentlich und geheim“ sowie „bürgerlicher Öffentlichkeit sowie Gegenöffentlichkeit“ widerspiegeln (vgl. Peters 2007: 55).
