Russian gas supplies to the territory of today’s Czech Republic first started in 1967 as the gas system build-out reached the frontier of the Soviet space. With the completion of the Brotherhood pipeline system, direct deliveries into the country reached 1.4 bcm in 1970 and Czechoslovakia was also an important transit state for Soviet gas exports from the late 1960s onwards. ‘Red gas’ was exported to a non- COMECOM member, Austria, through Czechoslovak territory for the first time in 1968, following a 5 km extension of the pipeline network from Bratislava to Baumgarten an der March on the western side of the iron curtain.
