Die Leinenweber von Valenciennes verstanden das sehr gut: „The lesser ability of most producers in the countryside obliges them to sell bit by bit according to their production; they have neither the strength nor the outlets, as producers in cities did, of getting rid of the materials advantageously, they are obliged to work through the hands of merchants who keep all the benefits for themselves.“ Wahr ist, dass die Arbeitskosten auf dem Land um 10 bis 20 % sanken, s. Händler in Romans, zum Beispiel, werden boshaft wo ihr Geschäft berührt wird: „if the piece of fabric (sold raw) is not at the dyer’s up to the expectations of the merchant, he forces the producer to take it back with threats to him of having his fabric seized under the pretext that it is not a quality fabric, and, as accommodation, he makes him pay the dressing and the dying, s.
