Abstract
When thinking of the “crisis in the recording industry”, one thinks of falling sales figures, piracy, illegal file sharing and stream ripping. The new forms of distribution of digital music associated with the advent of the Internet have resulted in a strong decline in sales for incumbent recording companies that has lasted for almost two decades. Due to rising sales from the relatively new business of music streaming, the crisis seems to be over. The aim of this article is to question the rather one-dimensional view of this pure sales-view and to highlight the crisis of the recording industry as a crisis of the predominant business model (BM) in order to subsequently demonstrate the advantages of business model innovation (BMI) in the recording industry.
The first part of the article examines to what extent the mechanisms of Christensen’s (2013) Logic of Disruption in the past and current developments in the recording industry are taking hold and presents BMI as a promising type of innovation. The second part examines and evaluates various current attempts by major recording companies to experiment with innovation. To this end, the findings of the corresponding management literature are linked to the results of six expert interviews with various stakeholders in the recording industry. Finally, suggestions for adaptation and improvement are proposed for those innovation experiments.
