Challenging the Matrix of Domination
The two consecutive uprisings of 2008/2009 that started in Gafsa and 2010/2011, which has been framed as triggering the “Arab Spring”, can be regarded as attempts to challenge the Matrix of Domination. Although women’s rights were not the driving force behind the uprisings under examination, this is not to say that women weren’t participating equally in the uprisings as advocates, onlineactivists, unionists, journalists or politicians. Numerous scholars studying the crucial days of the uprisings in the Tahrir Square in Egypt notice a “gender-bias free zone” (Sholkamy, 2012, p. 94).
