Abstract
Non-monetary returns of further education for older workers are highly relevant due to demographic change. Based on approaches from educational science and life span psychology, it is assumed that non-formal education (NFE) of older workers is positively associated with life satisfaction. Based on data of 2,277 older workers (M = 47.89, SD = 4.71, range 40–65 years old at T1, 49,1 % female, 56,4 % highly educated) from six waves of the National Educational Panel Study, the effect of non-formal education (NFE) on life satisfaction is analyzed. Based on a latent state-trait model, life satisfaction is differentiated in a stable trait factor and measurement-occasion-specific deviation from the stable trait level (states). Measurement-occasion-specific deviation in life satisfaction is predicted by NFE. Older workers participating in NFE before T4 respectively T5, have a positive deviation in trait life satisfaction at T4 and T5. Results are discussed with regard to changes in motives for NFE participation of older workers.
