Zusammenfassung

Theresa May steht als Nachfolgerin von David Cameron vor der Aufgabe, das Referendumsergebnis zu interpretieren und in konkrete politische Entscheidungen umzusetzen. Cameron hatte untersagt, für diesen Fall Eventualplanungen vorzubereiten. May muss ein ausgewogenes Kabinett bilden und klare Zielvorstellungen sowie ein taktisches Konzept für die Verhandlungen mit der EU entwickeln. Sie legt sich vorschnell auf einen harten Brexit fest. Im März 2017 löst sie den Austrittsprozess aus. In vorgezogenen Neuwahlen verliert sie ihre bisherige Mehrheit. Erst im Sommer 2018 legt sie in Chequers ein hybrides Austrittskonzept vor. Die Brexit-Diskussion wird danach chaotischer und konfuser. Der Widerstand in den eigenen Reihen wächst, die Opposition lehnt den im November ausgehandelten Austrittsvertrag ab.
