Abstract
Across industry, customer heterogeneity and product variety are proliferating rapidly (Fisher, 1997). Volkswagen AG, the leading German automotive company, reported that the number of product segments in the automotive industry quadrupled from 9 in 1985 to 40 in 2005 in parallel with increased diversity in the market (Volkswagen, 2005). Market diversity and its inherent demand variability make it difficult and expensive to match demand with supply.
